Diving Computer Accessories
Diving computer accessories represent excellent value for money in terms of both safety and increasing the amount of diving time you can have per session. With built-in features such as ascent warning functions and gas switching facilities, they are a vital piece of kit which goes hand in hand with ensuring that some the most important health and safety aspects of your dive are adhered to.
Why Buy a Diving Computer?
Before the advent of diving computers, divers would have to manually calculate their dive time, which was based upon the maximum depth they were diving to. Diving computers are able to provide a significant level of guidance based upon real-time information. Whilst a diving computer should always be used in conjunction with dive tables, they will update the length of time left on a dive, allowing multi-level diving to take place. In essence, it means that you’ll be able to safely stay under water for longer periods of time, with the added advantage of potentially reducing the time needed for safety stops.
How Does a Dive Computer Work?
A diving computer works by using time and depth information. This is then applied to a decompression algorithm which will work out how much nitrogen has dissolved in your body during a dive. Your diving computer will comprise of a depth gauge and a timer, which will continually display information on its screen. It will then use this information to calculate how much time you have left in order to ensure your continued safety during your dive. Most divers will invest in a diving computer for safety reasons, and we would recommend that all divers, from fully qualified PADI instructors to novices should consider purchasing one.
Computer Integration
In addition to keeping a manual log of your dives, many of our diving watches, such as the Suunto D6i include the functionality of being able download extra data onto your PC via USB. This allows users to access extra information that’s not normally viewable whilst only using the dive computer by itself. This helps when it comes to monitoring safety aspects of dives, such as the average time spent at each depth level, and the air pressure levels, and with improving safety aspects with future dives.
Alarms
The vast majority of diving computers come with integrated visual and audible alarms which will alert the diver when they are reaching their time limit on a diving session. They will also alert the user if they are ascending too quickly. This type of information can be vital for new or inexperienced divers in order to make sure that they are constantly monitoring the conditions by looking at their computer.
Wrist Mounted Vs. Console Based
There’s been a trend over the past few years to move away from traditional console-based diving computers. Recent advances in technology mean that the complex technology employed in console-based diving computers have been miniaturised into a wearable format. Many divers argue that wearing a wrist mounted diving computer feels more natural because we’re used to looking at our watches to tell the time, and having it strapped to your wrist means that it’s less likely to go missing. Many diving countries in different diving areas require the use of a diving computer. If you’re wearing it on your wrist, then it’s much easier to transport it round with you.
Safety First
There are several safety considerations that you should carry out when using your diving computer. Don’t wait until your diving time reaches zero before ascending. Always give yourself a safe margin of time. Although one of the main purposes of a diving watch is to ensure that your diving time is extended, it’s better to be safe than sorry.Always make sure you abide by your diving tables, especially if a member of your team isn’t using a diving computerFor safety reasons, you should never share your diving computer with a buddy partner. Users should always read the instruction manual, and should familiarise themselves with the most important features on the computer.
